JUNGFRAUJOCH SPHINX

A visit to Switzerland in June 2004 allowed a visit to the Junfraujoch by train and then to ascend to the viewing platform of the Sphinx.  Some pictures of the mountains and the glacier are available in the Geology overseas gallery.

Two interesting things in the pictures below are the rime formation and the wires of the Faraday cage.

The observatory at 3,580 m (11,790 feet), situated between the Jungfrau and the Mönch, is very prone to lightning strikes even in fine weather.  So to protect the observers (and the public) when outside on the platform it is constructed as a Faraday cage. [Weather March 2008, Vol.63, No.3]
