SNOW COVER EVENTS IN THE EASTBOURNE EAST SUSSEX AREA 1958-2008

A 50 year long record exists from private meteorological records kept by J Flude at Dudley Road, Eastbourne and then Wannock, Polegate and Eastbourne Road, Willingdon of snow cover events in the winter periods from 1958 to 2008. Only a few years data are unavailable. The photographic archive has been reviewed and pictures obtained from black & white prints, black & white negatives, colour slides, colour negatives, colour prints and finally digital photographs. Interesting and noteworthy pictures are included in the galleries below and in the separate gallery for the 1962-1963 winter event. These support the long term record produced which will be included on this webpage in the near future.

Slide 1 of the gallery below gives a plot of the snow cover (complete and partial) as the number of days per winter period. Slide 2 gives the maximum snow depth in each winter period together with the number of days of continuous snow cover. The lack of snow cover events in the past twenty years (since 1988) and especially in the last ten years (since 1998) is to be noted. This change can be related to the mean Winter (December-January-February) temperature. Slides 3 and 4 show the relationship using the mean winter temperature from the Eastbourne Wilmigton Square record. But note the low R2 factor for the line on Slide 4. Such comparisons can only be a guide. A snow cover day is when snow was lying at 0900 UTC or when snow was lying (often at the start of the fall) the previous evening.

GLAZE AT MAYFAIR CLOSE, WANNOCK, POLEGATE, EAST SUSSEX

On 22 January 1979 at 2315 UTC a period of freezing rain covered all surfaces with glaze at Mayfair Close, Wannock, Polegate, E Sussex. This persisted throughout the 23 January 1979 and was up to 3 mm thick on trees, shrubs, fences and walls.  Two photographs (given in the gallery below) were taken at 0920 UTC 24 January 1979 showing the glaze on the washing line and a small tree. It was up to 3 mm thick on exposed surfaces. By 1500 UTC it had all melted away.

ARLINGTON RESERVOIR - ICE COVERED PLANTS & WIND BLOWN PACK-ICE

The effect of wave action during a very cold spell in mid January 1985 led to this ice formation over the plants surrounding Arlington Reservoir in East Sussex. These pictures were scanned from colour negatives taken by J Flude whilst at Eastbourne Water Company.

During another winter part of the water surface froze. Blown by the wind a pack-ice formation was driven to the reservoir side. The date of this event is currently being researched but was probably early 1986.

SNOW IN POLEGATE, EAST SUSSEX JANUARY 1986

A snowfall in January 1986 - these picture probably taken on 7 January 1986 - provided an opportunity for snowman building and a picture of a snow covered Polegate Railway Station (before it was moved to the centre of Polegate). The decline in snow cover over the last 20 years has meant that some children have never seen little or no snow in this country.
